Both tirzepatide and semaglutide activate the GLP-1 receptor, however, tirzepatide is a dual agonist that also activates the glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptor. The appetite regulation of the GLP-1 is enhanced by GIP. Tirzepatide also enhances the release of insulin and reduces the production of glucose to a greater extent than semaglutide. These factors lead to more effective weight loss compared to low dose semaglutide.
